At Growthill, we are dedicated to helping businesses, whether startups, family-owned, or second-generation, evolve to meet modern standards while preserving their unique identity. Recently, our work with Marilu’s Market, a Burlington institution that’s been serving the community for over 30 years, was highlighted in an interview with Burlington Today!
This long-standing partnership has helped Marilu’s blend tradition with modern business practices, ensuring they continue to thrive and resonate with both their loyal and new customers.
When Marilu’s Market first approached us, they were seeking ways to keep the essence of their family-owned store while updating processes to enhance efficiency. As Mike Taylor, our co-owner, shared, “Marilu’s is such a staple in Burlington… We adapted some of the processes they were using internally to today’s way of doing business, and also the blending of the employees and culture so it’s operating like a new business but keeps the foundation of the old business. It’s like a facelift; we’re rejuvenating some of the processes.”
Our approach is always tailored, honoring the unique needs of each business. With Marilu’s, we developed strategies focused on internal processes, cultural integration, and modernized HR practices to support a balanced work environment. As Daniel Nudo, co-owner of Marilu’s, noted, “How we work with our staff, how we communicate with our staff, and how we deal with HR stuff internally… [Growthill has] been an integral part of helping us streamline and bring everything together.”
A key component of our work with Marilu’s has been improving data collection and financial planning to guide better, more precise business decisions. Jonathan Cocklin, our other co-owner, elaborated, “The value we bring is working with a company and identifying its problems… We try to fix how that works to free up [the owner’s] time to focus on the sales and growth of the business.”
By implementing efficient metrics and enhanced data analysis, we empowered Marilu’s to make decisions based on accurate insights, supporting them in prioritizing strategic goals over daily operational demands.
For Growthill, the opportunity to work with Marilu’s Market is more than just a business endeavor; it’s a chance to give back to our own community. Both Jonathan and Mike grew up close to Marilu’s, and this partnership holds special meaning. “We’re a small business ourselves based in Burlington, and we want to help other businesses see some of the success that we’ve seen over the years to really develop the next generation of leaders,” Jonathan shared.
The partnership with Marilu’s Market has been deeply rewarding for us at Growthill. Together, we’ve laid a foundation that supports not only the immediate needs of Marilu’s but also its long-term vision of being a great place to work and an essential part of Burlington’s community fabric.
Reflecting on the partnership, Daniel Nudo emphasized the mutual growth that has occurred: “They’ve been very helpful… there’s lots of room for both of us to grow… It’s been a fruitful partnership, and we’re happy with the work that we’ve been doing with them.”
